Learn about Freemasonry’s long history in Rhode Island and its relevance today.
Talk with Freemasons from around the state at the Masonic Grand Lodge of Rhode Island’s Open House on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: Freemason’s Hall, 222 Taunton Avenue, East Providence, RI 02914.
Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternal organization. As Freemasons we live by an ethical and moral code that distinguishes us and creates an atmosphere where friendship and understanding can grow among men of every religion, race and culture.
Freemasonry is founded upon principles of tolerance, care, kindness, honesty and trust. These are timeless values that are as relevant to the world today as they were 300 years ago when the organization was established.

FREEMASONS BELIEVE THAT:
- Truth, honesty and fair dealing are the cornerstones of respect and dignity in our relationships with others.
- Charity in thought, word and action makes a positive difference in the lives of others and ourselves.
- Commitment to our families and friends, courtesy to our neighbors and service to our communities and country are the foundations for a well-lived life.
- The opportunities for camaraderie, fellowship and service offered by Freemasonry nurture personal growth, making us better men.
THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP
Freemasonry induces a strong bond between members and produces life-long friendships.
An essential element of Freemasonry is care for the needs of each other. All Freemasons promise to be aware of the needs of those around them.
A Lodge provides opportunities in organization management, public speaking and character building.
In the 21st Century life can be hectic and stressful. Freemasonry is seen by many to be an oasis where calm and order prevail, therefore providing a distinct and refreshing channel where a busy man can find diversion and relaxation.
Most Lodges offer social programs providing opportunities for wives and families to widen their social engagement with other families with common interests.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP
Freemasonry accepts all men of good character. There are very few limitations, but there are some important exceptions.
Freemasonry requires a belief in deity, for no atheist may become a Mason. It also requires a clean moral life, for a Mason must also be a good citizen. Freemasonry strives to teach a man the duty he owes to God, his country, his neighbor and himself. It inculcates the practice of every virtue and makes an extensive use of symbolism in its teachings. It does not interfere with religion or politics and will not countenance any argument or contention within the Lodge in connection with an attempt to influence the religious or political beliefs of any person.
In Rhode Island, a man must be 18 years old to join. There is no upper limit on age.
We have 24 Lodges in Rhode Island, and they meet monthly. There are meetings taking place every day of the week and many areas of the State have more than one lodge you could join. Below is a table showing when the Lodges meet and what town they are in. Lodges usually serve their local communities but if you have a preference the table may help you choose.
Once we receive your request a Lodge will contact you, send you a petition application. You must fill out this application and return it. A committee from the lodge will meet with you. Your application will be voted upon. If you receive a favorable ballot, you will be notified when the degrees will begin. You and other candidates must learn a portion of what will be taking place during your degrees.
