RI Freemasons Take the (Icy) Penguin Plunge Again

The Rhode Island Freemasons made a significant, albeit cold, splash in the community this New Year’s Day with our enthusiastic support and participation in the Rhode Island Penguin Plunge for Special Olympics.

Under the dedicated leadership of W Anthony Amaral, who has spearheaded this event for the past decade, and this year’s Excelsior Brother A. J. Brockway, we Freemasons have showcased our unwavering commitment to charity and community service.

This group’s dedication exemplifies the Masonic value of relief, one of our institution’s core principles, which emphasizes aiding those in need. This year’s plunge was a resounding success, as many brothers along with supporting friends and families braved the icy waters of Scarborough Beach on New Year’s Day, joining hundreds of participants in this annual tradition.

The efforts went beyond just taking the plunge; we raised more than $37,000 for Special Olympics Rhode Island, a sum that will go directly toward supporting Rhode Island athletes. Getting involved like this shows how much we care about inclusion, empowerment and supporting people of all abilities. By raising both funds and awareness for Special Olympics, we are demonstrating how our core values translate into action.
